As part of the development of a new 17-story office tower, the historic Mining Exchange Building is being carefully restored and renovated, preserving its architectural legacy while supporting the evolving needs of a contemporary workplace. Serving as the lead designer and project architect, Wing Lee directed the design of both the restored historic lobby and the new lobby for the adjacent office tower.

Working closely with the preservation architect - Page & Turnbull, the design team preserved and repaired significant historic materials, clarified original architectural detailing, and thoughtfully reimagined the interior spaces to accommodate modern standards for daylight, workplace flexibility, accessibility, and technological performance.

The new office tower lobby establishes a contemporary architectural identity while drawing inspiration from the character of the historic Mining Exchange Building. A carefully curated palette of complementary materials, refined detailing, and proportion creates a seamless visual relationship between the old and the new, allowing the two buildings to read as a unified composition despite their distinct architectural expressions. The result is a thoughtful dialogue between preservation and innovation—one that honors the legacy of San Francisco's Mining Exchange while creating a contemporary workplace environment that reflects the evolving character and energy of the city's Financial District.
